Ranong is southern province bordering the Indian Ocean . About 568 km south of Bangkok , north to Chumphon , south to Phang-Nga (Takua Pa district) , east to Chumphon and Surat Thani and west to Myanmar and Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) . Ranong is a long narrow plot of land extending 169 km from north to south and the narrowest is 9 km . Like much of southern Thailand , it under goes two monsoons . Ranong gets the highest average annual rainfall in the country . Because more than 60 percent of an area 3,298 sq.km is mountains , over 80 percent forests.

Ranong is administratively divided into four Amphoes ( District ) ; Amphoe Kra Buri , La-un , Muang Ranong , Kapoe and one King Amphoe Suk Samran respectively from north to south . The provincial economy is supported mainly by fishery , mineral extraction , rubber , coconut and cashew-nut production . In Ranong they call cashews " ka-yuu" .

Hot spring is a well known attraction place of Ranong surrounding with the deep shaded forrest . Several islands ( Koh or Ko ) have a good beaches and live coral . Koh Payam or Koh Phayam and Koh Chang are good swimming beaches and several places to stay . Do not confused with the much larger island of Koh Chang in Trad province on easthern coast of Thailand. Koh Kam islands , Koh Kam Noi of has clear water for swimming and snorkelling , Koh Kam Tok also called Koh Ao Khao Khwai has a good beach , coral , fresh water and a camping area . Koh Khang Khao has a white sand breach and good for fishing .
